In traditional Human Design, you will often hear the terms “consistent” and “inconsistent” to describe defined and undefined energy in the chart.
But, because language morphs over time, those terms tend to create confusion rather than clarity. And I don’t want you to misunderstand what I am telling you about the defined or undefined energy in your chart.
So, let’s clear that up.
In our modern culture, we tend to interpret “consistent” to mean “all the time” or “often.”
For example, when a gym bro tells you that you “need to be consistent with your workouts,” you probably take that as “I need to go to the gym pretty often.” Or, if we’re being honest, “I don’t go to the gym enough.”
But the true meaning of the word consistent isn’t about time, duration, or frequency. And it certainly isn’t about enoughness. The actual definition of the word “consistent” is:
Consistent | Adjective
acting or done in the same way over time
And it’s that definition (no pun intended!) of “consistent” that applies to Human Design.
Defined Energy is Sustainable and Reliable (aka consistent)
When I am describing defined energy, I prefer the terms sustainable (you can use it without burning out) and reliable (it follows a steady, predictable pattern whenever it’s expressed).
When energy is defined, you will experience thoughts, emotions, and behaviors (in the area that the energy represents) in a reliable and sustainable way.
Think of it like being a handyman. You always carry your main toolbox—the hammer, nails, and screwdriver you use on every job.
That’s your defined energy. It’s always with you, always available, and you don’t have to think too hard about how they work.
When you need to hammer something, you just pick up the hammer and hit the nail. And there isn’t much consideration about “how” to use the hammer.
And…
If we filmed you doing it a hundred times, and years apart, the videos would look nearly identical: same posture, same speed, same intensity. And we certainly wouldn’t see you googling “how to use a hammer.”
That’s the essence of defined energy in Human Design. It’s not about being “on” all the time. It’s about having a reliable, sustainable way of using energy. You can count on that energy to “just be there” when you need it.
Now, let’s talk about how the tables turn when talking about undefined energy.
Undefined Energy is Receptive and a Source of Wisdom (aka inconsistent)
On the flip side, undefined energy is often called “inconsistent.” And, if we stuck with the actual definition:
inconsistent | adjective
not staying the same throughout
It might be ok. But, in the context of our current culture, it can be deeply disempowering.
Remember when I said that you might think that you don’t go to the gym enough when the trainer tells you to be consistent?
Well, that’s the heart of the problem.
Since we tend to make “consistent” mean that we “should” do more of that thing, we inherently make our “inconsistency” mean we aren’t doing something “enough.”
That turns the tool of Human Design into a weapon.
So, I prefer to talk about undefined energy in the way that it actually works, without the shame, guilt, or not enoughness stories.
Our undefined energy is actually a beautiful source of connection and wisdom. It’s the points in our charts that call “our people” to us and where, through the school of hard knocks, we become discerning about the way we are using that energy.
As we encounter others and go through the transits, that energy becomes temporarily defined. And in that temporary definition, you gather information about it, play with it, and see what happens. And, over time, we start to understand what that energy means in the context of our lives.
We learn how, when, where, and why to use that energy—and when to let it go. We come to see what is ours and what isn’t. And we discover who we really are in this lifetime, through the contrast of who we are not.
Let’s go back to the handyman.
Alongside his everyday toolbox – the hammer, nails, and screwdriver – the handyman also has a shed full of specialized tools. He doesn’t carry them around all the time, but they’re there when the situation calls for it.
Sometimes he pulls one out and realizes it’s exactly what the job needed—or he discovers it’s needed only after googling how to do the job. Other times, he tries it, fumbles, and learns by experience how it works in real life. And, over time, he starts to know more about which jobs require his specialized tools and which ones don’t.
And that experience actually makes him better at what he does.
If we filmed that process a hundred times, and years apart, the videos would reveal a story arc: a journey of learning, connecting, and ever unfolding clarity.
That’s how undefined energy works. You don’t haul it everywhere you go or rely on it to get you through every experience. But in relationships and the transits , you get the chance to try it, learn from it, and eventually know whether it’s a tool you want to use—or one you’re better off leaving in the shed.
