When you begin experimenting with your Human Design Strategy, you might find yourself wondering how to trust that life will bring you aligned opportunities. And you’re not alone—this is one of the most commonly asked questions.
And here’s the thing: my answer might surprise you.
Because, well, It isn’t exactly an easy questions to answer. The truth is, trust is a spiritual practice, not a switch we can flip or something we can check off a to-do list. Trust requires us to surrender our egoic stories and lean into the unknown—something that can be very scary for the human brain.
Because of that discomfort, we often try to place trust in the “wrong” things, as a way to avoid the deeper work of letting go of control. Trust, then, becomes code for controlling an outcome.
When we say we trust someone, what we often mean is that we believe they will do what we want or expect from them. And that’s where trust goes wrong.
We can’t control things outside of ourselves. We can’t make people bend to our will. We can’t make the car start if the battery is dead. And we can’t control the flow of life.
The only thing we can control is how we choose to act in the face of life being life.
So, what is trust, really? One definition of trust is believing something or someone to be reliable. When we believe something, we act in accordance with that belief.
So when we trust something, we take action as if that thing is true, even when we can’t be certain.
Notice how nowhere in that definition is the idea that the person or thing will do exactly what we want. It’s about that thing being reliable.
When something is reliable, it shows up consistently—whether it’s your car, your neighbor, or your best friend. In relationships, I often tell people they can trust others to be who they are, not who they want them to be. So, if you’re married to an asshole, you can trust them to act like an asshole—not to handle you with love and care.
Trust is not about a positive outcome; it’s about leaning into whatever is reliable. And even further still, it’s about believing in yourself and your ability to handle things as they are, even when they don’t go the way you expected.
That’s the scary part. Trust is really about taking care of yourself, because that’s the part you can control.
So, how do you trust that you’ll get aligned opportunities?
Well, how reliable is life at being life? What patterns have you noticed? Have you seen how life has a way of working itself out? Even in the darkest nights, the sun eventually rises again. And vice versa, the sun always sets, and darkness falls.
Has life ever thrown you a bone out of nowhere—a $20 bill in a parking lot, canceled plans when you didn’t want to go, or a stranger showing unexpected kindness?
And has life ever thrown you a curveball the moment you made plans? Has everything ever changed in an instant? Have you ever been absolutely certain about something, only to have life show you something entirely different?
Of course. Because that’s life. And it’s the most trustworthy game in town.
Life is reliably a game of change, of ebb and flow, of opportunities to step into your highest power and purpose. Life is always sending you opportunities.
So, the real question is: Do you trust yourself to take them?
- Do you reliably say yes when your inner wisdom says yes?
- Do you reliably say no when your inner wisdom says no?
- Do you honor your energy, boundaries, and values?
- Can you depend on yourself to follow your inner knowing?
- Can you rely on yourself to reflect inward when things aren’t going your way, or do you tend to play the blame game?
With those answers in mind, is it really life you don’t trust? Or is it yourself?
If you realize you’re struggling to trust yourself, that’s where the healing (aka deconditioning) has to begin.
