If you’ve already read my Human Design 101 article, you know that Authority is one of the core parts of the system; it’s your key signal in decision making.
While your Human Design Type and Strategy show you how your aura interacts with the world and how aligned opportunities come to you, your authority helps you know which opportunities to take…and which ones to let go of.
Your Human Design authority is your personal signal that guides you toward authentic, soul-aligned choices. It’s a specific way your body communicates alignment and helps you trust your next steps.
Authority isn’t logical. Or mental. No more long lists of pros and cons. Just straight truth that comes from your inner wisdom.
You’ll find your Authority written directly on your chart (here’s where to look):
Authority in Human Design is based on which energy centers are defined in your chart, and there’s a specific hierarchy that determines which one takes the lead in your decision-making process. That hierarchy is:
Emotional Authority Sacral Authority Splenic Authority Self-Projected Authority Ego Authority Mental Projected Authority Lunar Authority Each Authority has its own vibe, its own rhythm, and its own kind of clarity.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the basics of each Authority type so you can start recognizing and working with yours; whether you’re brand new to the system or just looking for a clearer, more grounded explanation than what you’ve come across before.
Explanation of the Human Design Authorities ════ ⋆★⋆ ════
Human Design Emotional Authority Emotional Authority Mechanics: A defined Solar Plexus, even if other authority centers are defined. type. Generators, Manifesting Generators, Projectors, and Manifestors can all have emotional authority.
Emotional Authority Key Signal: The decision that is clear when all emotions about the decision have been fully processed.
Emotional Authority Explanation: Emotional Authority is about giving yourself time to fully process your emotions before making decisions. Aligned decisions come when you “ride the emotional wave” and wait for it to completely pass before deciding.
Here’s why and what it really means:
Emotions are created when your thoughts and interpretations mix with felt sensations in your body. This happens in a wave-like pattern—a natural rise and fall of your feelings over time, with ups, downs, and everything in between.
As the wave moves, your perspective shifts. You might feel excited about something one day, uncertain the next, and irritated the day after that. Even if nothing external has changed. That’s the wave in motion.
As someone with a defined Solar Plexus, you’re highly attuned to that flow of energy.
But here’s the most important part:
As energy in motion, your feelings are fuel for action. But they aren’t the truth of any given situation. And when you treat emotions as truth, they fuel actions that aren’t always in alignment with your energy and purpose.
That’s why waiting for emotional clarity is so important.
So, what is clarity?
Clarity shows up between waves. It’s a grounded, spacious period in your body that isn’t charged with emotion. It won’t be loud or dramatic the way worry, excitement, or dread might be. Instead, it carries a quiet confidence—not urgent, not emotional, not something to analyze or cling to. It simply is . A steady inner knowing that your emotions have been fully processed and you’re now seeing yourself, your life, and your options with clear eyes.
That calm and clear state is when you’ll know the most aligned decision; its when the wave has passed and your truth feels calm, not urgent or loaded with meaning.
One final note:
With Emotional Authority, you’re not waiting to feel “certain” that things will go your way or work out perfectly. Certainty comes from the Ajna center and it’s an illusion. The truth is, the wave doesn’t stop, because life is always life-ing.
But you will have periods of calm clarity. Its that deep, grounded sense of I can handle this no matter what happens, and this is the path I choose. Not because you know exactly how it will turn out, but because you’ve honored your emotional process and you trust yourself.
Big decisions need space. Honor the wave. Let it move. Trust what you know on the other side.
Emotional Authority Experiment: Think of a decision you’re trying to make right now. Check in with yourself: are you in an emotional high or low? If so, pause. Let yourself feel, without acting. Sleep on it. Feel again tomorrow. And the next day. When the emotional charge fades, check back in.
Are you clear and know what you want to do?
Do you trust that you can handle any decision you make?
Or, do more feelings come up?
Keep riding the wave until the answer to the first two questions are yes.

Human Design Sacral Authority Sacral Authority Mechanics: A defined Sacral Center and an undefined Solar Plexus . Only Generators and Manifesting Generators can have Sacral Authority.
Sacral Authority Key Signal: Energetic expansion or contraction in response to life. Often experienced as a gut-level yes, no, or wait.
Sacral Authority Explanation: The Sacral Center is the engine of life; it generates energy to lovingly build and sustain life.
When you have Sacral Authority, you’re attuning to whether you have plenty of that energy or not. And that happens by noticing how your core responds to the opportunities that come your way.
When you have plenty of loving energy for something, your energy will expand. When you don’t, it will contract.
And sometimes, there will be nothing—or a pause—which means: wait and see.
Learning how your body uniquely responds comes with experimentation and practice. But to get you started, know that your signals might be internal, external, or a little bit of both.
Outwardly, it might sound like a hum, a grunt, or a sigh, a sensuous “mmm,” a dreadful “ugh,” or a breathy “ahhh.”
Internally, you might experience it as a pull forward, a sense of warmth, or a subtle tightening in your core.
The key is:
Does your energy get bigger or smaller in response? Bigger = yes, smaller = no.
Tune into your core, and ask:
Do I have plenty of available energy to see this through?
Sacral Authority Experiment: Pay attention to the tiny moments your gut responds: what you eat, where you go, who you have the energy to text back.
Don’t focus on what your mind is telling you about those choices. Instead, notice how your decisions are shaped by the expansion or contraction in your body.
Then ask yourself:
What happens when I honor that signal instead of overriding it?
Keep listening.
Keep noticing.
Let your body show you all of the abundant love-fueled alignment that already lives inside you.

Human Design Splenic Authority Splenic Authority Mechanics: A defined Spleen Center with an undefined Solar Plexus and Sacral. Only projectors and manifestors can have splenic authority.
Splenic Authority Key Signal: Instinctual “no” in the present moment
Splenic Authority Explanation: The spleen is the body’s real-time alert system, designed to keep you safe. It speaks through your instincts and five senses—sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch—and gives immediate feedback about what is safe or unsafe right now . That feedback might come as a sudden tightening in your chest, something tasting bad, a weird smell, a strange sound, or just an inexplicable vibe that says, “nope.”
The spleen doesn’t give reasons, explanations, or guarantees. It doesn’t forecast the future or push for commitments. It’s tuned into the present moment and offers moment-to-moment guidance about your very next move.
One of the biggest misconceptions around splenic authority is thinking it should give you a confident “yes.” But that’s sacral or will center conditioning.
The spleen doesn’t commit. It can’t. It “lives” only in the present and alerts you when something is off. Its either “no” or “not a no.”
If it’s a no, stop, run, or whatever you need to do. And if it’s not a no, keep moving forward in whatever way works for you.
The key is staying present in your body so you can actually hear what it’s telling you.
Splenic Authority Experiment: For the next week, tune into the sensory cues in your body. Notice what happens when you feel discomfort, unease, or sudden shifts in energy. Do you listen? Do you override it? Try responding to the small signals (like choosing a route home or turning down a plan) and see how it shapes your experience. Let your body’s real-time wisdom guide you without needing to explain why.

Human Design Self Projected Authority Self Projected Authority Mechanics: A defined G Center and Throat center with at least one of the following channels fully defined:
channel of the alpha (7-31) inspiration (1-8) the prodigal (13-33) But no definition in the sacral center or motor centers defined and connected to the throat. Only projector types can have self projected authority.
Self Projected Authority Key Signal:The sound of truth as it comes out of your mouth.
Self Projected Authority Explanation: Self-projected authority is about hearing “the sound of truth” coming from the tone of your own voice by talking out your decisions. When you speak out loud and are tuned into the quality of your voice, you will hear the guidance from your G center (home of the magnetic monopole, aka your soul) flow to your throat and out of your mouth. It will land with clarity in your body as “true” or “aligned” or “right.”
To do this well, you need to have a space to speak with the help of a “sounding board.”
A soundboard is a place that you can *just* talk, out loud, without being interrupted, analyzed, or offered advice. That could be a trusted person who knows how to just listen. It could be a family member, therapist, friend, or even a voice recorder. The key is that you have space to both hear the tone of your voice as you speak.
The “truth” will carry a specific tone and “land” in your body with a specific kind of resonance. It may take practice to recognize the tone, and probably even more to trust it, but once you do, you’ll find that your voice will guide you better than anything your mind (or other people!) could ever figure out.
Talk it out. Listen closely. Your truth lives in the sound.
NOTE: I am often asked how Mental Authority is different from Self-Projected. The key distinction is that the Self-Projected Projector hears their truth as it comes out of their mouth, while the Mental Projector hears their truth as it “bounces back” within a supportive environment.
Self Projected Authority Experiment: Begin by noting the tone of your own voice and how it feels in your body when you hear it. At first, you can take the pressure off by just observing how to talk about things that don’t have the weight of big decisions. Like, how does your voice sound when you talk about something or someone you love versus something that feels bitter. As you begin to recognize these sounds, experiment with who can hold true sound boarding space for you to talk things out.

Human Design Ego Authority Ego Authority Mechanics: The will center is defined and the solar plexus, sacral, and spleen are all undefined. Only Manifestors or Projectors can have ego authority.
Ego Authority Key Signal: A deep, aligned willingness and inner drive that says, “I want this, and I will make it happen.”
Ego Authority Explanation: Ego Authority is all about your heart’s true desires. But before we go any further, let’s get one thing straight: this isn’t the “ego” talked about in spiritual circles, the part you’re supposed to transcend. In Human Design, “ego,” “heart,” and “will” are all names for the same center. And here, we’re talking about the will center as a motor of aligned power, self-worth, and commitment.
When you have Ego Authority, your most aligned decisions come from your heart being fully “in.” This doesn’t mean following every whim or emotion. It means feeling the pull of your spiritual heart (aka magnetic monopole)—a deep inner knowing that says, “I want this, and I will make it happen.” When you’re aligned, your willpower is naturally available to fuel your commitment, even when things get hard.
The will center isn’t interested in people-pleasing, proving anything to others, or pushing through when your heart isn’t in it. If there’s no energy, no drive, or no inner “yes,” that’s a clear sign it’s not for you.
This is not about comfort. In fact, the right path might challenge you. But if your heart is truly committed, you’ll feel a sense of strength and clarity that says, “This is worth it.”
Pay attention to where your energy naturally shows up. When you feel that grounded pull and the will to see something through, it’s a yes. If it feels like dragging yourself forward, it’s a no.
Ultimately, Ego Authority is about honoring what truly matters to you. When your decisions are driven by your authentic heart, your energy is aligned, your willpower is sustainable, and your actions become deeply purposeful.
Your job is simple: trust your heart, and don’t settle for anything less.
Ego Authority Experiment: Notice what you naturally say, “I want” or “I will” to and what you don’t. Notice where that thought is arising in your body. And ask: would I be willing to use my energy, time, and resources to follow through on this, even if it gets hard, and even if it breaks who I think I am?
If the answer feels like a genuine yes from your heart, not your head or emotions, you’ve got your clarity.

Human Design Mental Authority AKA Projector with “no inner authority” and sometimes called “Environmental” authority.
Mental Authority Mechanics: A defined ajna and a defined head and/or defined throat, and all other centers undefined. Only projectors can have mental authority.
Mental Authority Key Signal: You recognize the truth in your own voice as it bounces off the right environment and returns to you with unmistakable clarity.
Mental Authority Explanation: Despite the misnomer of Mental Authority, like all others, you aren’t designed to make decisions rooted in your “mind.” Instead, the name “mental” authority comes from the defined ajna being the key defined center. Your wisest decisions come through hearing your voice reverberate in a fully supportive environment.
One of the things you will notice about your chart is how little definition you have in you chart. You have, at most, three centers defined. And that means that you are extremely sensitive to your surroundings.
If you’re around people you don’t jive with or a place just feels “off”, it becomes almost impossible to find clarity when making decisions. But when your environment feels safe, calm, and supportive, you can begin to recognize what’s right for you by speaking out loud and hearing how your voice reverberates around you.
It is similar to how the same song will sound different in a tiny hole in the wall bar, versus an outdoor amphitheater, versus blaring on the speakers in your car. The metaphorical acoustics of your environment change how you’ll hear the sound of your own voice and you being able to hear your own voice is essential.
Similar to the Self Projected Projector, you will benefit from having a soundboard. Which is different than simply talking about your decisions with someone else. It’s about being able to speak out loud and hearing the sound of your own voice. If someone is giving advice or interrupting you, you won’t be able to get the clarity you need.
But, when you are in the right environment, free to speak out-loud and listen for the reverberations of your voice, clarity will be loud and clear.
So when you feel lost or uncertain, start by changing your environment. Go somewhere that you feel safe and can hear yourself. Then talk it out. The clarity you need is in your voice, and it gets louder every time you listen.
NOTE: I am often asked how Mental Authority is different from Self-Projected. The key distinction is that the Self-Projected Projector hears their truth as it comes out of their mouth, while the Mental Projector hears their truth as it “bounces back” within a supportive environment.
Mental Authority Experiment: As you go into different environments, with different people, and with different “stuff,” notice what it’s like for you to speak out loud. What changes in how you hear your own voice. Begin to prioritize speaking about your decisions in places where your voice feels loud and clear.

Human Design Lunar Authority In some chart calculators, lunar authority will be called “no inner authority.”
Lunar Authority Mechanics: No defined centers. Only Reflector types can have lunar authority.
Lunar Authority Key Signal: Clarity comes by waiting through the full lunar cycle and tracking what remains steady across shifting experiences, thoughts, and feelings.
Lunar Authority Explanation: Lunar Authority is unique to Reflectors and is really about taking your sweet time to make decisions. More specifically, waiting a full lunar cycle (about 28 days) before making major life decisions. This is especially important for choices that impact your environment or the people you invest your time and energy with.
Because you have no natal definition in your chart, your “consistency” is shaped by the lunar transits. These daily shifts in the planetary landscape create a consistent rhythm that allows you to sample a wide range of energies, perspectives, and emotional experiences over time. As you move through the lunar cycle, clarity comes from noticing what stays steady across all those shifting states.
Similar to Self-Projected and Mental Projectors, your decision-making process is supported by the tool of sound boarding. This means speaking your thoughts aloud—not to get advice, but to hear how they land in your body as you move through the cycle. The goal isn’t to figure it out all at once, but to listen for what keeps ringing true over time.
As you move through the lunar cycle, notice what stays true and what changes depending on your environment and the fluid nature of your chart. What stays true is how you’ll know your next best decision.
In short, you are here to move slowly, to take your time, and to trust that your clarity will emerge in layers.
Lunar Authority Experiment: First, be sure that you are tracking your lunar cycles , as I discussed in the reflector description of my Human Design types post. And add an additional layer where you are specific tracking what you are sensing about any big decision you are sitting with. Pay close attention to the patterns that change versus stay the same.
