This is a post from my Human Design Chart Basics Series where I am covering the Human Design Emotional Signature and Not Self Themes for the five types. If you don’t have your human design chart yet, you can get one for free on Genetic Matrix.

Human Design Emotional Signature and Not-Self Themes

The basic premise behind the Human Design emotional signature and not self theme is that by following your strategy and authority, you will experience your emotional signature. But when you ignore your strategy and authority, you will experience your not-self theme.

But, first, I want to be upfront that this is one of the areas where I’m on a different page than many Human Design folx. To me, the language to describe the themes and how they work “in real life” is slightly misguided.

And, I don’t say that with any kind of judgment about Human Design people. I think that, culturally speaking, most people in the West don’t have a robust emotional vocabulary and use language that isn’t precise enough for my Unconscious Sun Gate 62. 🙂

As I discussed in my post on emotions, most people confuse thoughts and feelings. They will say that they feel something (i.e. I feel like…) when what they are actually communicating is their thoughts. Emotions are the single word descriptor for the emotional feelings that happen in our body and thoughts are the sentences, ideas, attitudes, moods, memories, etc. that happen in our minds.

In my experience, the emotional signatures and not-self themes are actually collections of thoughts that become an attitude about life. They are the stories we tell about the way life is treating us and the lens that we see the world through. They are happening in the mental realm, first.

And, since thoughts do create emotional feelings, there will be some feelings that come along for the ride. But the feelings are absolutely not limited to the ones implied by the “official” Human Design emotional signatures and not self themes.

Similarly, since our feelings become the fuel for our actions, there are also clear and distinct actions that fall within the realm of emotional signatures and not self themes.

Secondly, and probably even more importantly, there is often an assumption made that by following your S&A, you will somehow magically live happily ever after and experience your emotional signature all the time. But, happily ever after is for the END of romantic comedies and fairy tales.

Real life, on planet Earth, is all about emotional contrast. It’s about all the shit that happens before the happy ever after.

We are “supposed to” feel the full spectrum of emotions.

There will be moments of bliss. And moments of torture.

There will be moments of joy. And moments of sadness.

There will be moments of anger. And moments of peace.

All of it is part of the human experience.

There is nothing you can do to experience bliss and joy for every minute of every day.

And, despite what you may think, you don’t really want to.

When people die, you want to feel sad.

When unjust shit happens, you want to feel pissed.

When you are walking down a dark alley at night, you want to feel fear.

When you treat a loved one like hot garbage, you want to feel shame.

When a baby smiles at you in the grocery store, you want to feel joy.

All of those emotions have great wisdom to offer you about your life.

So, even if you were to dot every I and cross every T in your design, you will still have a 50/50 kind of life.

You will still experience “negative” thoughts and feelings. And, those “negative” thoughts and feelings will fuel “negative” action if you don’t know how to work with them in a skillful way.

Even if you do everything “right” according to your design, you will still be a human being on planet Earth.

This is what it means to be alive!

And finally, I don’t think of the Human Design emotional signatures and not self themes as some sort of proof that you are doing life right or wrong.

The only thing that makes life right or wrong are our thoughts about life. There is no old dude in the sky deciding if you did it right or wrong. There is no test that you must pass at the end. You are already living your purpose. (Get your WonderFULL Purpose Map here.)

“Living your design” is not evidence of your enlightenment, your goodness, your worthiness, none of it.

Which means that the Human Design emotional signatures and not self themes are not some sort of moral measuring stick.

They do, however, show us where we are RECEIVING our Divine Gifts and where we are in resistance to them.

When you are receiving your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude about life that “matches” your emotional signature. And, when you are “blocked” around your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude about life that “matches” your not self theme.

Now, with all that said, lemme get off my pulpit and tell you more about the specific Human Design emotional signatures and not-self themes.

Generator — Frustration/Satisfaction

As a Generator, when you are receiving your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude of satisfaction in your life and when you are resisting them, you will have an attitude of frustration.

Manifesting Generator — Frustration & Anger/Satisfaction

Technically speaking, Manifesting Generators are not a different type; they are a subtype of the Generator.

This means that their emotional signature and not-self theme is almost identical to the Generator, with the addition of throwing some anger in the mix. And, for the record, anger is just a more intense version of frustration.

Projector — Bitterness/Success

As aProjector, when you are receiving your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude of success in your life and when you are resisting them, you will have an attitude of bitterness.

Manifestor — Anger/Peace

As a Manifestor, when you are receiving your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude of peace in your life and when you are resisting them, you will have an attitude of anger.

Reflector — Disappointment/Surprise & Delight

As a Reflector, when you are receiving your Divine Gifts, you will have an attitude of delight in your life and when you are resisting them, you will have an attitude of disappointment.

I go into much deeper detail about the specific thoughts, beliefs, feelings, and actions for your type in the WonderFULL Purpose Map.

And I whole-heartedly recommend taking a closer look at your life and noticing how these themes might be showing up for you Ask yourself:

Am I {not-self theme} about my life?

Why am I {not-self theme}?

What emotions, actions, and results is my attitude of {not-self theme} creating in my life?

And, vice versa. Ask the same questions about your emotional signature.

These are all clues about the ways that you are using your energy in “correct” or “incorrect” ways and are showing you how to step into receptivity of your gifts.
