The official name for Human Design Gate 23 is The Gate of Assimilation. But I call it The Alchemical Wordsmith because its primary action is to communicate radical ideas and be recognized for your ability to initiate transformation with your words alone.

The Energy Spectrum of Human Design Gate 23

All energy in the Human Design chart exists on a spectrum of potential

On the “positive” end of the spectrum, Human Design Gate 23 is the energy for using your voice to communicate radical ideas and to become recognized for your ability to initiate transformation with your words alone. With gate 23 defined, you are likely to be known for getting to the point, simplifying complex ideas, and not wasting precious time or energy by babbling on about things that do not serve the end goal.

On the “negative” end of the spectrum, Human Design Gate 23 is the energy of holding back out of fear that you are too weird, worrying that people don’t care what you have to say because you are “too out there.” When feeling unrecognized, you might even tend to talk “at” people who aren’t ready to listen instead of trusting that there are people who want to hear what you have to say.

It is important to remember that these “positive” and “negative” frequency states are not “good” or “bad.” They are like mirrored doorways, inviting you to look inside and see yourself with crystalline clarity.

When you find yourself on the “negative” end of the spectrum, try not to beat yourself up, fall into a shame hole, or use it as evidence of what a terrible person you.

Instead, trust that challenges in communicating your radical ideas are not setbacks or problems. They are opportunities to explore how well you connect with your inner wisdom and how effectively you share it with the world. And to do that with LOVE.

Use these “negative” moments to get curious, offer yourself some Fierce Grace, and connect with the deeper parts of who you really are under the surface-level expressions.

When you use them in this way, you will come to understand your whole Self, reconnect with your purpose, and know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the innate value that you bring to the world.

My Personal Experience with Human Design Gate 23 (Gene Key 23)

Updated on May 6, 2024

Gate 23 is undefined in my chart, but it is a pretty significant gate because it is one of the gates that will bridge my small split.

christie inge's human design chart with the small splits circled

With gate 62, gate 43, and gate 56 hanging, I have a small split between my ajna and throat.

So, Gate 23 is one of the gates that would bridge that split.

One of the common experiences with hanging gates, especially when they hang in a significant spot in the chart like mine, is that we can experience feelings of inadequacy in the undefined gate.

As I always say, where we are defined, we often feel like we are “too much,” and where we are undefined, we can feel like we are “not enough.” And gates that bridge splits are like fuel on that fire.

(I discuss the effect of hanging gates, splits, and channels more inside the Human Design Map & Portal.)

That “not enough” voice was loud and clear when I first wrote my personal contemplation of Gate 23.

That was in 2022, and I was writing the gates articles on a schedule that put me a little ahead of when the sun would transit each of the 64 Human Design Gates.

One of the themes that began to unfold was that my life would start to reflect the gate somehow and layers of conditioning were peeling away.

And, true to form, that happened with Gate 23, but in a really profound way. With the gates I’d written before, my life was showing me. But in this case, it was the actual process of writing.

As I stared at the screen before me, I racked my brain for something profound to say. I really wanted to blow your mind with some sort of radical insight.

I started scanning for quantum leaps.

What have I said to someone that triggered a quantum leap for them? What had someone said to me that completely blew my mind? What quantumn leaps was I seeing in the world around me?

Then, I thought about the people with gate 23 that I’ve guided. I thought about one of my coaches with Gate 23 defined. I thought about friends or people I follow online.

I even started mentally making a list of “profound” statements I could share.

And, like a lightning bolt, I saw clearly what my conditioned mind was doing.

My mind was trying to compensate for my perceived inadequacy. It was telling me a story that, because this was gate 23 it must be profound and earth-shattering. I had convinced myself that if it didn’t trigger a quantum leap for whoever read it, it was a worthless piece of trash.

Good times. And so hilarious to me now.  How cute of my brain.

As I saw what was happening, I was able to surrender.

Gate 23 doesn’t “make” quantum leaps happen by “trying.” It happens spontaneously, through Divine Timing. And Divine Timing rarely matches our stories about timing.

When we look at the mechanics of the chart, we can see that from the head to the ajna, we can’t force the ajna to produce insight – we just have to sit with the questions and allow insight to arrive.

And from the ajna to the throat, we can’t force the “right” words to come out or make others receive our words. All of that is left to the mystery of synchronicity.

And what Gate 23 shows us is that a captive audience is part of the synchronicity. Like all projected energy, it is dependent on the receptivity of the people listening.

So, even if I say the most brilliant shit ever and you aren’t receptive to it, it will not land as a quantum leap. And I can say the most mundane shit ever but it be the exact thing you needed to hear to catapult into your next iteration.

It is like a square peg, round hole scenario.

Forcing it won’t work. Because it does not work that way.

I am grateful for what Gate 23 showed me that day. I am more aware of when I am trying to conjure profound words, instead of just letting them flow. I don’t need to carry the weight of that anymore.

By design, I will just keep attuning to my Gate 43 and let the mystery of Grace take care of the rest.

Pretty profound, no?

Now it’s your turn to contemplate Gate 23

When you stand in the truth that the gifts of gate 23 are always available to you (whether it’s defined in your chart or not)…

What words have “changed everything” for you? Why?

What words have you said to someone else that “changed everything” for them?

Do you trust the mystery of life to deliver the right words at the right time? Or do you try to force square pegs into round holes?

I encourage you to take some time with these questions. Take them out into your world and let their answers reveal themselves to you. Intend for deeper levels of clarity about gate 23.

And, if you have gate 23 in your Human Design Incarnation Cross, be sure to check out the Human Design Map where I go super deep into each gate of your cross.
