The Positive and Negative Sides of Human Design Gate 7 All energy in the Human Design chart exists on a spectrum of potential .
On the “positive” end of the spectrum, Human Design Gate 7 is the energy for offering empowering wisdom, guidance, and advice to others. Gate 7 has an innate understanding that forceful leadership is the mask one wears when one does not understand their true power. They “lead from behind” by showing others that accessing their own inner power is how magic and transformation occur.
On the “negative” end of the spectrum, Human Design Gate 7 is the energy for being on a power trip and insisting others bend to your will. It may try to rally people around its personal beliefs rather than what is best for the collective or boss others around without their consent.
Start noticing when you are feeling bossy, arrogant, or controlling but don’t be an asshole to yourself. Treat yourself the way you would a small child – with love, curiosity, and understanding.
My Personal Experience with Human Design Gate 7 (Gene Key 7)A couple of years into my coaching career, I worked with a coach that was helping me create the vision of what I wanted my business to be.
This was in the early 2010’s – before I knew anything about Human Design or how the chart was like a cheat code for understanding the value I bring in my business. do remember one conversation—it was like a small light in a sea of confusion.
She asked me to name a celebrity that I wanted to be like and started listing out names.
She said many of her clients wanted to be like Oprah.
And, before I knew what was happening, I said:
I don’t want to be like Oprah. I want to be like Oprah’s mentor.
I knew I didn’t want to be the star of the show. Human Design Gate 8 ).
But knowing what to do with all that was a whole different story. I was deep in that weird Projector tension—desperate to be seen, but terrified of what that might mean.
And I can see how understanding my Human Design would have helped.
Back then, I didn’t know that the channel of the Alpha (7-31) was defined in my chart—with my conscious Saturn in Gate 7, the Wise Shepherd, and my unconscious Saturn in Gate 31 , the Natural Leader. The path to being a powerful guide was always there. I just hadn’t leaned into what Saturn had to say about it.
Saturn is where our chart demands real self-discipline—not as punishment, but as a path to mastery.
Saturn is one of the placements that I call an “energetic undertone.” These are the things that our energy is communicating, no matter what we are doing or saying on the outside.
But the undertone isn’t just the energy; its the way you are holding it. The undertone is how we relate to that energy and our capacity to lovingly hold it’s full range of expression . If we hate or judge ourselves when expressing the low frequency of these energetic undertones, others are picking up on that hatred and judgment.
For me, with gate 7 in my conscious Saturn, that has looked like cultivating discipline in the way I guide others. More specifically, It’s been a practice of not giving my energy (insight, guidance, clarity) to people who do not appreciate it. If I am going to guide people into their power, I have to stand in my own, first. That is leadership. my radical experiment where I assume recognition and invitation when you spend time with me. And if that doesn’t work for you, I don’t stay in relationship with you. why recognition and invitation matter . But it does mean that I don’t hold back in an attempt to make others comfortable. And that if you need me to sit in the corner and be quiet or bend to your will for you to be happy, I’ll see myself out.
As a card carrying member of the people pleasing club, this has required major self-discipline. It means sitting with bitterness. Listening to it. Heeding it’s wisdom. And doing the hard work of cultivating relationships with who people adore having me in their world – including my sassy, nerdy, tangent loving, truth telling potty mouth.

That ability to stay rooted in my authentic wholeness?
That’s Saturn. Owning the fact that it’s hard and devoting yourself to getting better at it because it matters.
And it’s what makes me the kind of guide who can hold space for people doing big shit in the world—to be the wise shepherd.
Because guess what? Anyone doing anything that matters is catching flak for it. And it takes a special kind of human to hold space for people doing that. It truly does require mastery.
The part that people miss, though, is that that kind of mastery happens through love. Mastery, and therefore Saturn, is never about wielding power perfectly. It’s about wielding it with clarity, ownership, and conviction.
I cannot wield my guidance masterfully when I hate myself, criticize my every move, or belittle myself when I get it wrong. I cannot be the one who connects others with their inner wisdom when I am betraying my own. I cannot be someone who empowers others when I am constantly disempowering myself.
Since that sacred conversation with that coach, I’ve gone on to coach, guide, and mentor people doing amazing things in the world.
Today, it looks completely different.
I now have thousands of clients across the globe, and nothing delights me more than watching them take something I offered, integrate it into their life, and make pure magic with it.
For me, that makes every lesson from Saturn worth it. Every single day, I get to witness people access, own, and truly value their unique contribution. Whether it’s a post on social media, a quick DM, an email exchange, or a deep-dive conversation—it’s one of my greatest honors. And it will never, ever get old.
So I’ll keep showing up for the lessons of Saturn. Because it matters.
