There is a lot of confusion floating around in the Human Design space about hanging gates on undefined centers. Again and again, I hear people say things like:
Someone told me I don’t have access to the energy in the hanging gates in my undefined centers.
I read in a post that my gate doesn’t count unless the center is defined.
I was told this gate is basically turned off.
And the takeaway? It’s heartbreaking.
So why would my soul even pick that gate? Am I just screwed?
It feels like I can never win — something is wrong with me.
If you’ve ever felt that way, let me be very clear:
You have access to every single gate in the Human Design Chart—not just the ones defined in defined centers of your bodygraph. Every gate, every line, every center lives within you in some way. You just need to see how it works for you.
Let’s break this down.
You Have Access to the Whole Chart
Its so important, I’say it again:
You have access to every gate, center, and channel — not just in your chart, but in the Human Design chart as a whole.
Definition doesn’t control access — it simply shows how that energy tends to express through you, and how consistently it shows up as a core theme in your purpose and way of being. As a reminder…
Defined energy:
- The energy tends expresses in ways that are stable, patterned, and familiar.
- You’re more likely to approach it in consistent and recognizable ways.
Undefined energy:
- The energy is just as present — but it’s more fluid in how it moves through your life.
- Your relationship to it is often varied, responsive, and shaped by the transits, your environment, and relationships.
- These are often the places where you develop deep wisdom — through lived experience, contrast, and experimentation.
And yes — this absolutely includes hanging gates on undefined centers.
Being in an undefined center doesn’t make the gate “less yours.”
There is nothing you are not.
You are everything. The sun. The moon. The stars. And the mystery that holds it all up.
Undefined energy is just more interactive, dynamic, and nuanced.
Hanging Gates on Undefined Centers Are Magnets for Connection and Expansion
Hanging gates in undefined centers are not broken pieces of your chart.
The hold all of the qualities of a hanging gate on a defined center. PLUS some.
They are also magnets. Entry points. How life — and other people — get in to show you something powerful.
They draw people in.
They invite experiences.
They open you to energies that will expand you, challenge you, and ultimately bring deep wisdom — not just about the gate itself, but the entire center it’s hanging in.
And when a hanging gate lives in your Incarnation Cross? That just means that part of your purpose is to be deeply connected to others — and to grow through those connections.
That, my friend, is not a problem. It’s magick of the highest order.
Here’s an example from my own chart:
I have Gate 51 hanging in my undefined Will center; it’s in the conscious Earth of my incarnation cross.
There is absolutely no part of me that believes I don’t have access to that energy. In fact, its something I knew about myself long before Human Design crossed my path.
To be honest, its one of the most alive and catalytic energies in my life. I’ve watched it play out since I was a tiny child.
I have lived a life full of shocks.
Trauma. Sudden changes. Things you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.
My first therapist told me that people with stories like mine jump off bridges.
No joke. My life was FUCKED UP!
And I had every opportunity to shrivel up and die.
But for me, from an early age, it all became fuel. Those experiences became initiation. They became a doorway into deep personal and spiritual growth.
And even more than that — they were the doorway into Will center wisdom.
For a long time, I believed I needed to prove my worth. That if I could just work harder, be more useful, or finally earn approval, I would be OK.
But over time — and through many initiations — that story cracked.
Now, I see it clearly:
Worthiness is an illusion of the ego.
It is completely irrelevant in the expression of my purpose.
My purpose is to be me — and that’s it.
(Hint: at the end of the day, that’s your purpose, too.)
That’s what hanging gates can do.
They are not just pieces of a broken puzzle — they are portals to deep personal truth.
The Connection Effect
Let’s take it one step deeper.
- A hanging gate is a magnet.
- When someone comes along with the harmonic gate — the one that completes the channel — a kind of activation happens.
- That connection isn’t necessarily about function or outcome. Sure. Some people will be partners in making things happen. But, at the deepest level, these connections are about what becomes possible through the interaction.
In my case with the hanging 51 on an undefined will center, people with Gate 25 are often drawn to me — and I to them. The energetic match completes the Channel of Initiation.
And when that happens, something opens up.
There’s a shared experience, a mutual recognition, and often, a deeper expression of purpose that begins to unfold — not just in concept, or through rugged individualism, but through lived relationship.
The undefined center gets engaged.
The hanging gate was the magnet.
And I’m invited to grow into a fuller, richer understanding of what that energy is really here for.
But that’s not all…
The Stories We Tell Ourselves Matter
As humans, we are wired for cognitive bias.
Our minds will always seek out evidence to support the stories we’re already telling — even if those stories are rooted in fear or defeat. And that happens all day everyday in the Human Design space.
When the internal dialogue sounds like:
Why did my soul screw me over with this chart?
Why would life give me a gate I can’t even use?
Your brain will answer.
And the answer? It will point you straight toward powerlessness.
It’s going to sound like:
I’m broken.
Something is wrong with me.
The Universe hates me.
And that is why it is important to get curious. Your brain is going to look in whatever direction you point it.
What if you asked:
What is beuatiful about the people and experiences I have been drawn into?
Who are my allies and what kind of magic will we make together?
How is this helping me deepen my experience of my purpose?
These kinds of questions don’t just open doors —
they show you where the door has been open all along.
And don’t get it twisted. This isn’t just spiritual poetry — it’s science, too.
Your brain is wired to answer the questions you feed it. The Reticular Activating System (RAS) filters your awareness based on what you’re focused on.
Confirmation bias keeps you finding what you already believe.
And neuroplasticity means the more often you ask a question, the more your brain builds pathways around it.
In other words — your questions literally rewire your reality.
Which means that asking shitty questions is always going to give you a shitty answer. There is no way around that except to turn your questions into sources of power.
And that doesn’t just apply to the questions you are asking about your Human Design, it applies to your whole life.
The Universe Does Not Hate You
All that to say…
If you have a hanging gate in an undefined center — even if it’s part of your Incarnation Cross —that gate is not a mistake.
It’s not blocked.
It’s not some cosmic error.
It’s not evidence of your shitty stories.
It’s a magnet.
It’s a portal.
It’s an invitation into your own depth, truth, and growth.
You don’t need to “fix” it.
You don’t need to ruminate on it.
And you definitely don’t need to throw your hands up and assume your soul set you up to fail.
You just need to be in loving relationship with it — curiously, consciously, and with compassion.
That starts by setting aside the rules you may have learned about what’s defined or undefined in your chart. And noticing how this energy is already showing up in your lived experience — not through force or effort, but through natural attraction.
Open to seeing all the possibilities of your magic. It’s there. You just have to look for it.
