One of the most disempowering things I’ve seen taught in traditional Human Design spaces is that we “can’t be” aware of how the gates on the unconscious side of the chart will play out. That we will just move through life, living out the archetypes, and maybe someday, we will see the energy.
As if some kind of karmic puppet master is pulling the strings.
This way of thinking about the chart cuts you off from your most potent sources of energy. The very sources of energy that you need to direct if you want to live with more meaning and purpose.
You are the whole universe, experiencing yourself, and you coming to know that, with every fiber of your being, is how purpose unfolds.
To me, the unconscious side of the chart does not mean inaccessible; it means power that was hidden away in an attempt to be accepted by others.
Here is what I mean…
Your chart has two sides.
The conscious side, sometimes called the mind or the personality, is on the right hand side of the chart. On my example bodygraph, they are colored in black:

The conscious side holds the archetypes you incarnated to fully expand into . That means, becoming the person that consciously directs the full range of expression, not just the expressions that feel safe or lovable. Throughout the course of your life, the way you hold these archetypes becomes deeper and wider.
The unconscious side, sometimes called the body or the design, is on the left hand side of the chart. On my example bodygraph, they are colored in magenta:

The unconscious side are the archetypes that you were most conditioned to repress. The parts where their particular flavor of expression was seen as bad, wrong, too much, or not enough. In order to stay safe, to belong, to be lovable by the people around you, you learned to shove these parts of your into the unconscious.
They didn’t start in the unconscious. They were moved there, bit by bit, until they become unrecognizable.
In my world, these parts are called the shadow . And, as Carl Jung is commonly quoted as saying:
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.
(What he actually said was: The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. That is to say, when the individual remains undivided and does not become conscious of his inner opposite, the world must perforce act out the conflict and be torn into opposing halves.)
As you move through life, you start relegating these parts to the shadows and they start running the show. Or, what I often call, leaking out sideways.
For example, if you look at my chart above, you’ll note that I have gate 49 in my unconscious moon. And from my late teens into my early thirties, I cut people out of my life with an (unconscious) quickness and would have 100% told you it was because of the person being cut out .
It was directing my life and I was calling it fate.
The moment you become aware of it, though, it becomes a choice.
And it is that choice that give you your power back.
Today, I direct that gate 49 energy, on purpose, towards the mastery that is expanding in gate 16 in my conscious moon. I know how to find that gate 49 energy and most importantly, I see it as neutral energy that I can use, as needed for my expansion. Most importantly, I deeply love, respect, and value that part of me.
I no longer get to hide behind my painful stories. The tension becomes the catalyst for choice. The thing that allows me to hold a deeper and wider expression of everything that I am.
The whole universe. Experiencing itself. No longer calling it fate.
In 13 Mirrors Mystery School, this is how you will be working with your chart. No longer hiding behind your bullshit stories and choosing to direct your energy. On purpose.
